The Queen’s Gambit

Chess seems to be gaining more and more attention in the media. Grandmaster chess players like Hikaru have been successful at live streaming over the past year. The Netflix Original series The Queen’s Gambit came right as chess is gaining momentum and popularity. How good is the series?

The Queen’s Gambit tells the story of a troubled genius Beth Harmon. Despite her terrible circumstances she manages to find happiness in unlikely places. We get to see both sides of success. Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Beth brings the character to life beautifully. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her performances.

This show has been the highlight of the year for me when it comes to TV series. I have not been as excited to watch a series like this since The Expanse. That is another series that is currently in an exciting season which I will review after the season finale.

It’s gripping and caught my attention from the first episode with compelling drama. I didn’t even realise how fast the time flew by while I was watching. Throughout the entire series it kept this momentum going. Every episode has excellent pacing and keeps your attention consistently.

The weakest episode was the fifth episode, but not by a large margin. I would still give that episode a nine out of ten, which says a lot about the whole series.

I cannot give this limited series enough praise. If you haven’t seen it yet: Go watch it ASAP!

Rating: 10/10
